Going Fair Trade

0 Posted by in Fair trade, Food & drink on January 29th 2010

Less than a year ago, Cadbury’s announced their first foray into the Fairtrade arena. Since then, Kit Kat have also acquired the Fairtrade mark, and despite many raised eyebrows that people have directed at them, in my opinion this can only be a good thing in the long term.

Ambidextrous Chocolate Range Aims to Cut Accidents

0 Posted by in Company News, Food & drink on April 1st 2009

Whether it’s simply an ‘urban myth’ or simply a popular but unsubstantiated statistic, the fact remains there are numerous claims that over 2500 left handed people are killed each year from using products designed for right handed people.

These same sources claim that it’s fairly common knowledge that left handed people do not live as long as right handed people, mostly due to accidents. Even if you look at a simple tool, like scissors, they have to be used in a less than efficient way in order to make them work. So a task that might be usually considered safe may become extremely unsafe.

Here at Ethical Superstore we’re passionately committed to providing the widest range of ethical products to the widest range of consumers.  So we’re proud to announce that we have worked with all our chocolate producers to compile a ‘safe list’ of chocolate products which not only meet strict ethical criteria such as Fairtrade, Organic and Vegan criteria but are completely ambidextrous.

Cadbury’s Dairy Milk to go Fairtrade

0 Posted by in Food & drink, New Product on March 4th 2009

Will Cadbury's soon become Fairtrade like these chocolate chunks?

Rumours reach EthicalSuperstore HQ that Cadbury’s is set to announce that it is go fairtrade on all of its Dairy Milk range of products. This is the highest profile brand yet to go fairtrade.

When Cadbury’s bought Green and Blacks, we decided to hold fire on delisting them for a change corporate ownership while we decided whether Cadbury’s would negatively impact on G&B or whether it would be a postive impact on the whole company. (Green and Blacks the acceptable face of Cadburys?) It now looks like the positive approach to sustainable trade has had an impact on the whole Cadbury group.

So is this good news? I think on balance it is. Awareness of fairtrade will leap again as more people become exposed to what it is about through a product they are already buying. It also removes the age old quibble – “the fairtrade version doesn’t taste like my brand”. Now your brand is fairtrade so it really is a no effort switch. The volume of fairtrade cocoa will soar with direct benefits accruing for the producers.

A Divine Cocoa Breakfast

Anane Mensah sharing his Divine Story

Anane Mensah sharing his Divine story

This morning, Ethical Superstore was proud to welcome two of the cocoa famers from the Kuapa Kokoo Fairtrade cocoa cooperative, located in Ghana, West Africa. The cocoa that this co-operative grows, cuts and dries is used to make Divine Chocolate, which is certainly more than enough to make all of us sit up and pay attention.

The name ‘Kuapa Kokoo’ means ‘The Good Cocoa Farmers Company’. It’s a bit of a tongue twister in Ghanaian, but it has a good ring to it, and is certainly evocative of the faraway country from where the cocoa originates. It’s a name to be conjured with, and a name which is synonymous with Fairtrade success, as the stories of Mr Anane Mensah and Mr James Adiyiah told us first hand.

Anane’s and James’ roles in the co-operative are important ones. They are both Recorders, charged with the task of weighing and recording the amount of cocoa which is farmed and processed to be sold. Being responsible for the amount each farmer is paid is a large responsibility, and through this job they have both gained a respected place and influence in the Kuapa Kokoo community.

What women really want – an ode to Valentine’s Day

3 Posted by in Fair trade, Food & drink, We LOVE on January 19th 2009

The question of what women really want is (or ought to be) at the forefront of men’s minds in the lead-up to Valentine’s day. However whilst compliant boyfriends, husbands and prospective suitors rack their brains over the next couple of weeks to find that special gift to make their beloved’s knees turn to jelly, there will always be ones who forget, those who are obliged to rush off to purchase a last minute gift, and the few who risk social outcasting and feminine rage by spurning the commercialisation of Valentine’s fever and refusing to indulge.

But would such a rage be justified? I rather suspect that anyone out there who avoids Valentine’s Day only dares to do it after careful and sensitive discussions with their other halves. And does a last minute gift really count for anything? I can’t help but think that a well thought out gift planned with love and given as a surprise is a treat, and anything else is jumping on a bandwagon…but perhaps that just makes me a hard girl to please.

A Bloke’s Guide To Valentine’s Day

3 Posted by in Fair trade, Food & drink, We LOVE on January 16th 2009

Right lads, listen in. You know it, I know it, and most of all, the girls know it. Valentine’s day is a chore. Like most chores, ignoring it and hoping it will go away will get you nowhere, apart from maybe a few nights sleeping on the couch. Worry not though, as I’ve got a few simple tips and ideas which will make it as painless as possible, and best of all, she’ll think you put loads of effort in. Winner!

When it comes to Valentine’s day, the five P’s really come into their own. If you’re unfamiliar with the five P’s, it goes something like this – Proper Preparation Prevents Poor Performance. In other words, get sorted early and you’ll be set. There’s nothing to be gained in leaving it until the last couple of days to pick up a cheap looking card and some wilting, overpriced flowers from your local supermarket. Get sorted early and you can get the best of the bunch at the best prices.

The obvious choice for
