Festival Favourites 2013

0 Posted by in Beauty, Festivals, Green Living, New Product on June 4th 2013

We’re beavering away here at Ethical Superstore HQ, preparing for the Summer and searching for loads of new eco products to list.  Check out our festivals favourites to see what we’ve found.

One particular brand we found is Nilaqua, who have tackled the question of how to stay clean when there’s not much water about.  People don’t often think about the environmental impact water has at festivals.  In addition to the diesel fumes/transport pollution of using tankers, the water has to be heated (usually with gas burners or generators) you have to dig holes in the ground for waste, you need chemicals to purify and prevent disease, then you have to collect the grey water and tanker it away again. Overall, festival showers are a large cost and detriment to the environment.

Nilaqua is kind and gentle to the skin and contains no parabens or alcohol. Simply apply the liquid directly to the hair or body, massage to lift dirt and grease, then remove by thoroughly towel drying! These alcohol free goodies are not only far better for the environment than washing with water but they save queuing, give you a bit of privacy and of course they leave you sparkling!

We have Waterless Body Wash and Shampoo in handy 200ml or handbag (or man-bag!) sized 65ml bottles.  Both are great for refreshing after a day moshing and removing the inevitable mud-pack treatment that is synonymous with British summer festivals to leave you ready to rock another day.  There’s also a convenient Hand Sanitiser to keep your hands clean germ-free on the go!

Check out this video and see how easily Nilaqua cleans with absolutely no water involved.

FreeLoader Pro: The Ultimate Solar Charger

0 Posted by in Living The Green, New Product, Technology, We LOVE on June 26th 2009

The original FreeLoader is one of the most popular products here at EthicalSuperstore, and judging by the amount of customer queries we receive about it, you’re all keen to harness the power of the sun for your charging needs. However, with ever changing charging platforms and fancy new gadgets launching every week, it’s hard to keep up with the FreeLoader’s compatibility with your devices (and as I’m a Product Information Assistant it was starting to get to me!).

Well, the answer to all of your questions (and mine!) is here. The FreeLoader Pro is the ultimate, professional solar charger capable of charging your most power hungry, energy sapping gadgets and devices.

With a Multi Voltage switch allowing you to charge anything from your mobile phone and mp3 player right through to a digital SLR and video camera, it’s this years must-have green gadget for any tech-geek, eco-warrior, or light-stepping adventurer.

So, let’s just clarify;

Q: Will the FreeLoader Pro charge my iPhone 3G?

A: Yes!

Q: Can I charge my digital camera battery with the FreeLoader Pro?

A: Yes!

Q: Does the FreeLoader Pro have a battery level indicator?

A: Yes!

Ahhh, result.

Let’s just hope all of the products we stock don’t follow in the FreeLoader’s footsteps; ticking all of the boxes and answering all of your questions right out of the box, otherwise I might find myself out of a job!

Ethical Beauty – Who’s The Fairest Of Them All…?

1 Posted by in Fair trade, Fashion, New Product, Product news on June 24th 2009

It hasn’t passed our notice here at EthicalSuperstore  that two of our most popular blog topics have been regarding the poignant question of ethical beauty products – skincare, hair care, make up and make up removers that don’t cost the earth are right up there at the top of many peoples’ priority lists.

Whether it’s a guilty secret or one of your greatest pleasures, everyone loves to pamper themselves every now and again. This might involve a quiet moment with a book or an indulgence in your favourite sweet treat rather than a face-mask or a luxury body scrub, but for myself personally, I enjoy nothing better after a hard day than enjoying a nice hot bubble bath, beautifully scented and wonderfully relaxing.

With so many different beauty and skincare products on the market it’s often hard to know which way to turn. We all know by now that we ought to avoid phalates, sodium lauryl sulphates and other nasties (worryingly still found in many mainstream brands of skincare and cosmetics), however where do you go from there? Do you buy natural products, or only opt for those with certifiably organic ingredients? Do you stick to vegan-friendly pampering, or is it more an issue of avoiding animal cruelty that is at the top of your list?

But there has been one glaring omission in the market which has puzzled me on several occasions. One type of pamper product that has been conspicuously absent from both specialist and supermarket shelves is Fairtrade Labelled skin treats – up until now.

We are delighted to be able to unleash Fairtrade Labelled Bubble & Balm onto our shelves today – this delightful new ethical skincare range has been developed in conjunction with the Fairtrade Foundation, and is set to transform my own pampering sessions, as well as do great things leading the march in the world of cosmetics.

Bubble & Balm looks great in its stylish silver pots and bottles, and each potion and lotion smells fabulous too. But much, much more than this, the message given by the Fairtrade Mark is that the producers working alongside Bubble & Balm are getting a great deal, which says a lot both about the company, and about the people who buy these products and support this Fairtrade cosmetic pioneering first.

Whether it’s Fairtrade Shea Butter sourced from a producer co-operative in Burkino Faso, or Fairtrade Cocoa Butter from a small-scale farmer co-operative in the Dominican Republic which tempts you first, these products give you the best of both worlds – these moisturisers, body oils and bath salts are naturally produced, using natural ingredients, and come with the world’s leading Fairtrade Certification too.

We’d love to know how you find Bubble & Balm, and what your take is on expanding the Fairtrade Labelling system to cover an ever-growing range of products. Will Fairtrade Labelling for skincare and pampering products change your priorities when you’re making your own purchases? I know it’s certainly something which will change my habits.

So next time you have a ‘Mirror, mirror on the wall…’ moment, take a moment to think about it…who IS the fairest of the all???

Peaches Geldof Gets Ethical

0 Posted by in Fair trade, Fashion, New Product on April 17th 2009

Peaches Geldof lives her life in the limelight. As the daughter of Bob Geldof and Paula Yates, Peaches has had a high profile right from day one, and as one of the UK’s most prolific socialites she’s rarely out of the glossy mags.

Some people might be tempted to criticise her for having life handed to her on a plate, but today we’re applauding Miss Geldof for going the extra mile. Proving that she’s listened to some of the lessons that her dad’s work has taught her, Peaches has been working alongside one of our favourite fair trade jewellery manufacturers, Made, to design and produce a fabulous new range of handmade fairly traded jewellery which we think really hits the spot.

In Peaches’ own words:

“I like Made because it’s ethical yet this doesn’t compromise the fashionable status of their collections…the handmade attention to detail adds something special to each piece created.”

This bold, bright and stylish range was inspired by warm summer days and daisy chains. It’s the perfect way to jazz up your summer wardrobe as the days (slowly!) start to get a little warmer.

Record Shakers!

0 Posted by in Fair trade, Food & drink, Get Involved!, New Product on March 6th 2009

Just a glimpse of one of those ‘You don’t have to be crazy to work here.. but it helps’ notices is normally enough to send a shiver down my spine.  Today however, everyone at Ethical Superstore was ‘going bananas’.
The reason – we’re taking part  in a bona fide world record attempt organised by the Fairtrade Foundation which hopefully will raise awareness of Fairtrade and the benefits it delivers to third world producers.

We don’t need too much encouragement to find an entertaining or unconventional twist to proceeding so we thought we’d share with you some video of one of our banana eating escapades.  We made a banana ice cream – using a prospective new product – a people powered ice cream maker.

Despite it’s hamster ball styling this is a product that definitely puts the fun into functional, and the resulting ice cream was very cool in both senses of the word.

Rude Awakening!

1 Posted by in Food & drink, Get Involved!, Living The Green, New Product on March 6th 2009

It was with some sadness that I realised that after having feasted on a variety of incredible slow cooked lunches, today I’d be returning to sandwiches.

The week had been a real voyage of discovery for me. I’ll be forever grateful to Elaine for introducing me to harrissa relish and appreciate both Analisa and Twanna who have opened my eyes to cooking in drinks rather than stock.

However it was probably Analisa’s demonstration that the slow cooker is worthy of kitchen worktop space in the summer as well as the winter, that got me thinking most. I’d mentally pigeon holed the slow cooker as simply a hot comfort food provider on cold, dark winter evenings, but now I know better!

A slow cooker isn’t just for dinner; it can kick start the day too – as a hot comfort food provider on cold, dark winter mornings! With the unwelcome return of icy weather I decided to experiment. I left  the slow cooker on its low setting (the versatile Ecolectric slow cooker has a choice of three heat settings)  over night to see if what I’d heard was true – that – slow cooked porridge is amazing.

Last week we welcomed Rude Health Organic Foods to the shelves of Ethical Superstore. With a ‘Rude’ brand name it may not surprise you to learn that some of their product names sound a little cheeky too,

Cadbury’s Dairy Milk to go Fairtrade

0 Posted by in Food & drink, New Product on March 4th 2009

Will Cadbury's soon become Fairtrade like these chocolate chunks?

Rumours reach EthicalSuperstore HQ that Cadbury’s is set to announce that it is go fairtrade on all of its Dairy Milk range of products. This is the highest profile brand yet to go fairtrade.

When Cadbury’s bought Green and Blacks, we decided to hold fire on delisting them for a change corporate ownership while we decided whether Cadbury’s would negatively impact on G&B or whether it would be a postive impact on the whole company. (Green and Blacks the acceptable face of Cadburys?) It now looks like the positive approach to sustainable trade has had an impact on the whole Cadbury group.

So is this good news? I think on balance it is. Awareness of fairtrade will leap again as more people become exposed to what it is about through a product they are already buying. It also removes the age old quibble – “the fairtrade version doesn’t taste like my brand”. Now your brand is fairtrade so it really is a no effort switch. The volume of fairtrade cocoa will soar with direct benefits accruing for the producers.

Ethical Cookerstore?

0 Posted by in Food & drink, Get Involved!, Living The Green, New Product on March 2nd 2009

Lunchtimes in our office have seemed a little tame recently.  Following the success of the recent Ethical SOUPerstore challenge, when a number of us demonstrated it was possible to beat the credit crunch by sharing a tasty and ethical lunch, we’ve been developing a culinary itch we just had to scratch.  But how?
Enter the Morphy Richards Ecolectric Slow Cooker.

Slow cooking has much to recommend it
•    Convenient – fits a busy lifestyle, put all you ingredients in that morning and come home to a delicious meal in the evening.
•    Flavoursome – Slow cooked food is cooked in its own juices fully absorbing all flavours.
•    Economical – Low levels of energy are used to power a slow cooker.
•    Versatile – Cook everything from curry, soup, chowder, casserole and even desserts.

Environmentally, slow cooking has advantages too – slow cookers use low levels of energy, making them economical to run (rather than heating a large conventional oven). Better still the Morphy Richards claim that this Ecolectric Slow Cooker uses up to 44% less energy than other slow cookers on the market.

So four of us have got together to give it a thorough trial. . .
